Hands down, might be the best restaurant in La Crosse. If you haven't heard of this place you've been living under a rock because the food here is so rich, creamy, delicious, and downright naughty, you'll wish you extended your gym membership after eating here. My husband doesn't even like Italian, and this is his all time favorite place to indulge. I have dined here more than 30 times and I'm sure the waitstaff knows me by name. I have never ordered anything bad on the menu because it would just be impossible. My all time favorite: The raspberry pork medallions with couscous. Absolutely delightful and one of their seasonal specials. (BTW, if you haven't dined at Kates and you're looking for a knock-your-socks off experience, order one of the specials. They are all seasonal and fabulous. You can't go wrong. Other runners up: Crab cakes, gnocchi, Apple Gorgonzola Bruschetta, The filet with curry sauce and lobster ravioli, ohh the list goes on! Don't forget dessert! The chocolate bread pudding is so mouth watering and sweet, served with cool ice cream. It's enough to feed a small army. Don't forget to check out the restrooms for humor. Kate has designer shoes pegged on the wall in the ladies room. Otherwise, the restaurant is anything but funny. Very classy and well decorated. The new location is conveniently located downtown and has that fun downtown feel. Can you tell I love this place?

I really don't understand all of the positive reviews. The only reason I'm giving this place two stars instead of one is because I liked the interior decorations and very much appreciated the friendly staff. The food however, was really nothing to write home about. Majority of the menu is pasta (no pizza at this location unfortunately), which were all surprisingly expensive. Anyone who has ever cooked knows that pasta is one of the easiest and cheapest meals you can ever cook. The pasta I chose (pollo pesto penne) cost $21 and was definitely not worth the price (even though it was one of the cheapest pastas on the menu!). You can tell that they are trying hard here to give people unusual options (which will be immediately clear when you get your salad and bread), which as a foodie I'm all for, but here it just fell flat and ended up just looking pretentious for no reason. I actually recently randomly met the owner, and can clearly see her influence in this kitchen (let's just say she wasn't the friendliest). Little tip: if your restaurant is empty on the night when you run a half of all wines promotion, it may be time to look in the mirror. So don't waste your money and just go to Kate's Pizza Amore (same owner and surprisingly much better).

First thing I noticed was the fact that it was highly recommended to have a reservation and when we arrived at 6:30pm on a Friday there were very few tables full. The next thing I noticed was that there was no one at the bar. We enjoy a cocktail prior to dining so a nice bar is important to us. I ordered a lemon drop martini, something I'd expect to executed well in an upscale place. It was not, too sweet and the bartender openly was reading a recipe and trying to figure it out. The stools at the bar are very uncomfortable, almost like the don't want you to stick around there. Ok enough negative. The staff were delightful. I liked the quasi booth we were seated in. I liked the decor in general although I couldn't quite wrap my head around what they were trying to represent since they specialize in northern Italian cuisine. Quite contemporary. We had the stuffed port. App. Which was good but I'd have to say I'd try something else next time. My husband had the filet with lobster ravioli and both were fabulous!!! Wish I had ordered it. I had the Angry Seafood. Although very complex, I was sad. My bad, I should know better than to have delightfully fresh seafood slathered in spicy red sauce. Although I love spice it really overshadowed the lightly sea flavor of the seafood. It was my husbands birthday so they gave him a birthday Tiramisu with candle at the end of our meal. Such a nice touch. Going back again but will enjoy our pre-dinner cocktail somewhere else before we get there. Looking forward to trying other selections.

My favorite restaurant in La Crosse, so far. I ordered the portobello for an appetizer and it was amazing. Full of flavor and good sized for 2. For dinner, I ordered their special, osso bucco. The osso bucco was good but the butternut squash risotto that it sat on was to die for. Literally, one of the best things I've eaten recently. I highly recommend the pear champagne vinegarette because it's super delicious. Can't wait to go back! For the appetizer, osso bucco, and a non- alcoholic drink costs about $45 before tip. Pricy but so good!

Haven't been here at the new location. Was very impressed. First of all if you have everything my beautiful wife wants to accommodate her dietary needs..BONUS. Second of you make an amazing filet, amazing. So that coupled with GREAT service from Ashley our waitress, this experience is one of the best I have had in La Crosse. They have many options to satisfy GF. Come in and have a great meal and enjoy the ambiance of Kate's!

Just because you serve food on white plates with sprinkled parsley doesn't equate to a 5-star, fine-dining experience. (Don't believe me? Look at all the pictures on Yelp for Kate's on State. It's like a parsley bomb went off in the kitchen and got all over the plates)

Again took my family to eat here and overall the food was decent. Seems that the service and the food was trying to hard. Food was over seasoned with sauce in the pork dish I had. The true flavor of the pork was over powered with the heaping of sauce that overpowered the dish. I will say all of the appetizers were very good and we ordered 5 different plates as they were truly the highlight of the experience. server had a slight attitude. We handled her just fine just a little unprofessional for a reasturant trying to be an more upscale establishment. The rest of my family and friends enjoyed the food but again not overly impressed. Atmosphere was very warm and inviting besides the wait staff. Will try again in the near future.

We had supper here last night and had a very good experience. The waitress was very informative and helpful with very quick service. The food is primarily pasta with 2 chef selections that were is osso bucco and a steak option last night. I had the angry seafood pasta and my husband had the carbonara, both were amazing. Bathrooms were clean and ambience was great. Would absolutely recommend this restaurant.

Kate's on State is an amazing restaurant. La Crosse is lucky to have such a place. Everything I have tried there has been incredibly delicious; from the salads to the seafood. If you are in La Crosse you need to check out this restaurant.

Have been traveling extensively in North America and Europe on business and pleasure and enjoyed many good restaurants. Kate's On State belongs definitely to the selective groups of them! And you don't expect it in La Crosse, Wi necessarily. What a wonderful surprise. The menu is well selected and the food is superbly prepared. Service is outstanding, very knowledgeable and extremely courteous and accommodating! Highly recommendable!

I usually don't like to rate places when I'm only going to visit once on business travel, because I want to get a good feel for what a restaurant is like over multiple visits. However, I was sufficiently impressed by Kate's on State. The food was excellent: I had two of their appetizer plates, and everything was absolutely delicious and also beautifully presented. Rich and flavorful, but without feeling heavy and greasy. I also thought the server, Rachel (?) was quite good. Not just friendly, but very...professional. It's a difficult thing to explain, but it reminded me of servers in Italy, where being a waiter or waitress isn't just something that people do out of desperation to pay bills for a few years in college, but a career one takes pride in and really enjoys as a profession. Highly recommended. If my experience is at all representative, you will not be disappointed dining here.

When you go to Kate's, order the filet and lobster ravioli. There are so many tempting seasonal option and honestly, everything is great, but the filet and ravioli is off the charts. For an appetizer, I would suggest their crostini with Gorgonzola. It is typically paired with a fruit of some kind (ie fig jam, fresh pear) and it is always really tasty. The service is good, the atmosphere at the new location is very nice and their food is amazing.

Service was decent and the food was spectacular! I have never had crab cakes that were as savory or delicious. The pasta that came underneath it came with a delicious sauce with the right amount. The decor was modern and allowed for privacy. Cannot wait to eat here again!

Very nice place ! Dinner was so good, the salad was excellent. Homemade dressing! Yum !! My husband had the Pollo Puttanesca, thought it was excellent quality & flavor. Should have a little more pasta with it. I had the Pollo Amore, was excellent !! We enjoyed our meal here, it was our first time here. Service was very good also.

If you want authentic Italian, than this is the place. By far, one of the best restaurants in the La Crosse area. Kate's would easily fit in any major metro area and still be one of the best. Fresh ingredients, top preparation/presentation and a great owner and staff. If you want your meal to be an experience, Kate's on State should be at the top of your list.

Three of us had dinner last night. One thing that can end my relationship with a restaurant is inconsistency. We were there last year and it was wonderful. Last night my Mom said she would rather go to Ciatti's. We appreciate good food and do not mind spending $31.00 for an entree but this experience was disappointing. The appetizer was tasty (fig and gorgonzola on crustini) but four small peices on a huge plate of fresh spinach. Really? That made each crustini over $2.00 each. Salads were fine and offer little morsels of different tastes and textures that one doesn't usually see on a salad. My blue crab stuffed ravioli was very fishy tasting, the prawns were overcooked, and the sauce really didn't have much flavor. The creamy sauce on another entree was very greasy and the stuffed portobella just didn't offer any excitement at all. The desserts were fine and the coffee was good but didn't make of for the overall disappointment of the meal. Bottom line is if I am going to spend $140.00 for an evening meal then I need to count on the meal being good every time.

If you are looking for good food in La Crosse, look no further. The restaurant serves Northern Italian food and the menu is very extensive, there is something for everyone here. The specials are also delicious. My parents and I were in La Crosse looking for good eats (read: there is a whole lot of Crapplebees going on). Found this place on Yelp and so happy we did. It was one of the best meals I have ever had. Seriously. In La Crosse, I know. But go and you will not be sorry. The service was top notch. Our server, Ethan, could not have been better. He was great with suggestions and they were spot on. my dish was a seafood medley in a lobster cream sauce over homemade wild mushroom ravioli ($28). My Pops had the Pork Medallion special with was on a bed of raspberry infused couscous. ($34). My Mother got the Penne Chicken dish with pesto and it was delicious as well ($19). Each dinner is served with a unique and delicious salad full of interesting ingredients. it was a real treat. All dressings are made in house and are very good! Although this did not bother me, I think that some people could have been put off by the casual decor. I think my parents said it best, if you are paying that kind of money for a meal, then you expect white linens on the table and a little bit more of an upscale atmosphere to make it truly feel special.

Wow this food was amazing. I travel every week. Heard about the steak and ravioli. Holy crap. I can say best steak I have ever had. The ravioli was incredible. Server was very nice. She could definitely talk up the menu and guide me more though. Make it more of an experience. The food is definitely there. Nice job.

Kate's features an upscale Italian inspired menu that makes it hard for a first time visitor to choose what to get. I arrived with a friend and we were promptly seated (being a Tuesday, the restaurant was sparsely populated). Service was good although not exemplary. And my Beefeater martini that I ordered with a twist oddly came with olives as well. The good news is the food was fantastic. We both had off menu specials, my friend going with a tenderloin filet served with lobster ravioli and shrimp while I had the ossobuco. The shank was tender and delicious, but the risotto with baby Bella mushrooms was amazing! The real star of the night was desert. I had the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream and asked for the bourbon cream sauce from their pumpkin pecan bread pudding. It is to die for! Be sure to ask for it - you'll be happy you did! Unfortunately, despite much pleasing and begging I couldn't get the recipe much less an ingredient list - but I will order the bourbon cream sauce with the apple crisp again - maybe even as my dinner!

Great meal.. Had the balsamic and Gorgonzola gnocchi! The house salads were awesome too.. lots of little flavor bursts between the pickled beans, grapefruit slice, in-house made dressings, mozzarella balls, etc.

Hands down the best restaurant in La Crosse and the best Pork dishes I have had in all my travels across the US.

I was in LaCrosse for business and turned to Yelp to help me find some good places to eat. We need more Yelpers in LaCrosse! Kate's On State was pretty highly recommended so I decided to try it. I am so glad that I did. From the outside it looks like nothing special. That is probably why even though I briefly lived in LaCrosse about 5 years ago I had never heard of Kate's. Inside, however, the atmosphere is great. Very cozy and upscale. The food itself was the best I've had in LaCrosse. I don't remember the name of my pasta but it was a cheese ravioli in a light cream sauce with mushrooms, prosciutto, pancetta, and chicken. It is one of my favorite pastas of all time. I am an Italian food snob so it says a lot that it is one of my favorites. I also had the crab cakes for an appetizer and they were very good. The service was so fast. Almost too fast because I was enjoying the ambiance of the restaurant and my glass of wine. It is somewhat expensive, but the portions are very large. I would recommend to Kate's that they should offer half portions at lower prices, but that is my only complaint. If you go to one place in LaCrosse I would recommend Kate's On State. I hope my business sends me back so I can go again.

The filet and mushroom ravioli were awesome. But the room temperature was freezing!

My husband and our two teenagers celebrated a special event at Kate's. We couldn't have been more happy with our choice. The food was amazing - EVERY SINGLE BITE! The staff was SO helpful - keeping our water glasses full, being patient with our questions and even coming outside when we were trying to take a family picture after our meal. Highly recoommended - although we'll have to save this spot for special occasions....unless we leave the kids at home. :-)

The food is good and the service is better than most places in la Crosse. The prices are reasonable for what you get, not over or under priced. The only thing is that its a bit dated. The parsley all over the plate is amateurish, it serves no purpose and looks sloppy, especially when its on every plate. Food tastes good, but plating and creativity could use some work. Its what a small town restaurant thinks big city fancy is. The effort is appreciated though, its much better then anything else I've had in La Crosse.

I have been in La Crosse for work the last few weeks, and have sampled quite a bit of downtown offerings while staying at the Radisson. This place is over rated by the locals, and for the $ there are better options in the area. The french press coffee and desserts (tried Tiramisu and bread pudding) were very good, as were the bread plate and spreads. However the entrees are forgettable. Osso Bucu is a no. Seafood pasta was just OK.

This is our absolute favorite place to go for special occasions! We always ask for table 12, and look forward to the wonderfully romantic atmosphere. It feels like we are in a much more cultured place than LaCrosse WI! Our favorite dishes are the Pollo Pesto Penne, Pollo Saltimbocca and the Balsamic Gorgonzola gnocchi. Yum! We are both from big cities, Chicago and San Francisco, so having a place like Kate's nearby is a real treat. We had not found anything that satisfied our palettes like Kate's does!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
